So I thought I would write this post on how you could improve your own websites rankings. When looking to complete your own SEO you firstly need to think, "Am I wasting my time", lets face it if you want your electrics dome your call an electrian, if you wany your drains unblocked you call a plumber. Why is Search Engine Optimisation so different? After all it takes years of knowledge to become a Good SEO and get good results. Still not put off? Ok let see what we can do to point you in the right direction. 1. Check out the free guides on the internet. The are numerous free guides on the internet on how to complete your own SEO - a lot of these however are written by people who have obviously picked up a few tips themselves and decided to write a guide so they can appear to be an expert. Personally I would only expect to get the very basic information from these guides 2. Books Now these are a step up from the free guides available on the next the people writting them normally have a good understanding of SEO and the information can be very helpful. I personally have read "The Art Of SEO" and believe that anybody looking to complete their own SEO should buy this book and have a good read. 3. Blogs Forum etc.. etc.. I do have an issue with Blogs and Forums, the biggest being that the majority of the people posting have absolutly no idea what they are going on about, somebody ask a question and they post a reply based on something they saw elsewhere without never actually testing and try techniques out for themselves, so they have nno idea if what they are saying will actually help. HOWEVER there can also be some absolute gems, and it doesn't take long to work out who knows what they are talking about and who has no clue at all! But do watch out for the know it all, all though they have lots of answers it doesn't mean they know what they are talking about, so be careful on the advice you take. People who know what they are talking about will have tried test cases and tried different things on different website to see what effect the changes make. 4.Building your own test site and having ago! Many guys in the SEO field will say that building your own sites and practicing SEO is the only way to learn. Well it certainly shows how hard it is :) There are mixed thoughts on this however I believe that this is an important part in advancing your SEO knowledge The problem with this is most people tend to buy a keyword based domain name write some text on the subject add some SEO and within a week are number 1, well it is not suprising no one wants to be number one for that keyword and you probably believe now that SEO it easy and get very unhappy when you cant rank for a real keyword. HOWEVER - Once you've got a basic of knowledge, building a site is the next logical step. I strongly suggest starting small and preferrably with a topic that you're personally passionate about rather than one you think could make you the next millionaire!!! 5.Events and Talks If you're really hungry to learn how to become a Search Engine Optimisation Expert in person, see real life examples and hear stories from people in the industry, getting out to events is an excellent next step. The best place to find out about these are the SEO forums many people will talk about events how if you speak to your local chamber of commerce they are probably aware of an event and may be able to help. Do be careful some events are run purely for the SEO in question to meet new potential clients not to give any REAL SEO information. Also don't forget to keep track of your progress - Rank Trackers such as Website Position Pro is an excelent way of keeping track of your progress and making sure you are going in the right dirrection to number 1!
